Reading Repair Cafe

repair cafeReading’s second Repair Cafe is taking place on Saturday 16 November from 2pm, hosted this time by Reading Hackspace and supported by Transition Town Reading and GREN.

Repair cafe is a chance to learn how to repair things that are broken rather than throw them away.

Experts will be on hand to help with repairs ranging from electronics and computers, to sewing and tool sharpening. The exact list of repairers will be confirmed soon, but definite help will be on hand with technical and electronics, computers and sewing. The event is entirely free but donations are welcomed to enable us to continue running the Repair Cafe in future.

Arduino Intro Course Day

This weekend we ran our first micro electronics course based on the popular Arduino learning platform and we were very well subscribed. We had some great kit to demo on the day and during the session guests managed to work out how to:

  • about the differing Arduino board/options
  • basic communication protocols
  • differences between analog and digital pins
  • how to install the drivers and IDE
  • upload code to the microprocessor
  • layout some circuits and troubleshoot
  • get everything hooked up and working

On top of that the attendees made:

  • a working night light
  • a heating/cooling system

I’m pretty sure everyone had a fab day and we’ve now accumulated some great kit and we hope to have a follow up programming course too soon.

This Terminator head was made by hand using a couple of different methods including lost foam casting with aluminum and was a real treat to see in person!

Haunted Halloween at the Hackspace

Here’s some cool visable laser pics and other fun Halloween bits that took place this year on our open night.

First Robot Workshop

This our first Robot Workshop in our new central Reading location, led by iRobot aka Richard.

There will be lots of robots to play with including a UMI RT100 which has been serving drinks under C# in the past, but it would be nice to serve hackspace members under Python, a small Mitsubishi arm, with no electronics….yet. Also there will be 4 or 5 humanoid bipeds to play with.

Or whatever you fancy. Do it on the day, or plan and help create the robot loading arm for the can crushin’ machne, an on-going hackspace project.

RLAB is an adult, member supported community workshop following the worldwide Makespace/Hackspace model that promotes meeting. making and creating for those without the facilities at home, work or college.
